Once bitten, twice awry

In the context of international sporting events, the Gibraltar issue appears to be ensnaring all those who venture a misplaced and ill thought out comment on what is, at once, a complex but really very simple matter.

Not lost is the irony that both Rodri and Morata, two of the most talented players on the European champions’ team, ply their trade in the English Premier League. In fact, when Morata reminded Rodri of this fact on video, the audible reply was “I don’t care”.

It can be summarised quite easily, without even venturing into the political - Gibraltar is not Spain’s to claim, nor Britain’s to give away. Neither Paddy Power last year, nor the Euro Championship winning Spanish team this year have understood this.  In this article, we explore how exactly both these entities stumbled over the tiny Rock of Gibraltar, and the consequences that followed.
