Shane joined Hassans in April 2024. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in November 2018 and was admitted as a barrister in Gibraltar in February 2020.
Shane has a busy common law practice. His instructions extend across various areas including crime, public & administrative law, personal injury and clinical negligence.
Shane often assists senior members of the dispute resolution team with high-value commercial and admiralty disputes.
Criminal
Shane predominantly practises in criminal defence, with regular appearances before the Juvenile, Magistrates’ and Supreme Court. He has notable experience in acting for juveniles and adults charged with violent crimes; including robbery, wounding and violent disorders.
Shane has experience in conducting jury trials, notably securing acquittals in relation to a high profile violent disturbance involving multiple co-defendants.
With increasing investigations and prosecutions into sexual offences, Shane is regularly instructed to defend in matters ranging from rape and sexual assault through to grooming and indecent image offences. He is also privately instructed by complainants and employers in an advisory capacity. Shane has experience in dealing with vulnerable witnesses.
He also accepts instructions in drug related offences and serious traffic offences.
Police
Shane also has experience in bringing civil claims against the police for assaults, trespass and false imprisonment.
He also however receives regular instructions from serving and former police officers arrested or charged with criminal offences or facing disciplinary action.
These instructions include high profile cases involving allegations of misconduct in public office and an inquest into deaths at sea.
Business crime/financial crime
Shane’s criminal practice also includes mutual legal assistance requests and applications for production orders in relation to investigations into financial crimes.
Mental health
Shane has a busy practice in mental health law representing patients appealing admissions into a mental health facility under the mental health act. He also has notable experience in acting for patients detained pursuant to hospital orders.
Clinical negligence/ Personal Injury
He is regularly instructed by the local health authority in relation to high value claims including those involving catastrophic injuries. Shane also has experience related to personal injury claims arising from accidents at work and road traffic accidents.
Other
Shane also has experience in claims for judicial review. He also accepts instructions in applications for parole and has experience in Immigration law, having previously represented Asylum seekers.
He also accepts instructions in employment and landlord and tenant disputes.
