Harriet Brown is a barrister qualified in England and Wales, who practises out of Old Square Tax Chambers (based in London). She works as an external consultant with the Hassans’ Tax Advisory Team. Hassans has many overseas clients, requiring broader tax advice and assistance on multi-jurisdictional matters; Harriet’s international expertise complements Hassans’ already strong local and cross-border practice.
Harriet is called to the bar in England and Wales and Jersey, and is the only barrister so qualified practising in the field of tax. She has particular expertise in the field of international taxation in particular double tax treaties and international information exchange. She regularly advises on UK tax, and the tax systems of other common law jurisdictions, and has in-depth expertise in the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories, particularly relating to residence and domicile with a strong specialism in the taxing aspects of corporate restructures. She has drafted legislation for a number of small jurisdictions. She often acts for taxpayers in both Jersey and England and Wales before all levels of tribunal and courts.
She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Harriet has published a number of books including, The Jersey Law of Trusts (Key Haven 2013), A Practitioners Guide to International Tax Information Exchange Regimes (Spiramus 2021) and The Interaction of the EU Treaty and UK Tax Code (Key Haven 2013). She has also contributed to a number of academic journals including Intertax, The Bulletin of International Taxation, and the Journal of European Taxation. She is a co-presenter of the tax podcast International Tax Bites with Grahame Jackson which has listeners in over 120 jurisdictions. She was nominated as Best Tax Junior for the Tolley’s Taxation Awards in 2023 and is part of the award-winning team at Old Square Tax Chambers in the UK.
