Following May's papal election and Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid, we now finally have “white smoke” in a deal for Gibraltar.
Both have rumbled on seemingly interminably, but Gibraltar’s approximation to Europe under a just announced political agreement (to be recorded in a treaty), is finally DONE.
Whilst conclusion of the drafting of this treaty’s final text shall now follow (and analysis of its detail and its implementation in practice shall be key) there are immediately discernible opportunities for Gibraltar and its vicinity. These notably include facilitating the free movement of people (and an enhanced Brexit-mitigating basis for the provision of services and goods) between Gibraltar and the Schengen area, by the removal of physical barriers and infrastructure at the border with Spain. The significant advantage of such measures perhaps explains the jubilance with which this treaty announcement has been met on both sides of the border.
With its continuing single market with the UK (allowing for passporting of financial services) and its facilitated interaction with the EU under this new treaty, Gibraltar as a gateway to both the UK and the EU is now a reality ripe to bear fruit (for businesses and high net worth individuals alike).
