The Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming: Safer Gambling Week 2022

The University of Gibraltar is home to the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming (“CERG”), a multidisciplinary research institute which focuses on various disciplines such as social and personality psychology. The CERG’s research centres around the etiological factors of addictive disorders in an attempt to better understand gambling behaviour and subsequently, the mechanisms of addiction.

The CERG is supervised by the International Scientific Advisory Board, made up of international leading scientists specialising in gambling research, addiction psychology and neuroscience.

Safer Gambling Week 2022

Last month, the CERG hosted two events during this year’s Safer Gambling Week. These events focused on the essential role that academia and industry collaboration play in the protection of customers and the creation of a safer gambling environment.

The first of the two events hosted by the CERG was a webinar held in collaboration with the Yale University’s Gambling Research Centre. The Webinar saw experts from the United States and Canada share their expertise on various areas such as the use of authentic gambling products (such as slot machines) in laboratory research.

The second event was a conference held at the University of Gibraltar campus. Key researchers in the gambling industry delivered talks on numerous topics including the identification of at-risk gamblers. This was followed by a dynamic roundtable discussion between attendees.

The successful collaboration of these events was highlighted by the Chair of the CERG, Professor Zsolt Demetrovics, who hoped that such events will establish “new connections between the CERG and the Gibraltar Gaming Sector”.
