Gibraltar a natural gateway into South America?

4 years ago with the looming threat of Brexit I set out my vision for a post Brexit Gibraltar-La Linea (in Southern Spain) financial hub. I postulated that just because something had never been done before didn’t mean it couldn’t be done. History always confounds the sceptics.

The challenge presented by Brexit took me on a journey across Europe – from Gibraltar to London, Luxembourg, Malta, Madrid and back, on numerous occasions. Southern Spain became the natural focal point for the initiative because the level of business co-operation between Gibraltar and the hinterland, for the mutual benefit of both sides of the frontier, was potentially huge.

4 years later and my interest in this has been reignited.

We are now seeing a significant amount of fintech interest in Gibraltar reflecting what is happening globally in the blockchain and crypto space. In this respect, I believe that Gibraltar is especially well-placed to become the gateway to the South (Latin) American continent for the following reasons:

1. Gibraltar’s highly reputable and established regulatory infrastructure in the blockchain and crypto space.

2. Proactive Government of Gibraltar and financial regulator the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission.

3. Spanish and English speaking workforce and service providers in Gibraltar (including lawyers and accountants).

4. An unlimited potential pool of Spanish speaking labour across the border on the Spanish hinterland.

In fintech, Gibraltar can be for South America what Singapore is for Asia or Hong Kong for mainland China. Watch this space!

In fintech, Gibraltar can be for South America what Singapore is for Asia or Hong Kong for mainland China.
